Letter to Hon Michelle Rowland

I got so annoyed about having to waste time dealing with mail sent to me incorrectly that I sent this message to Hon Michelle Rowland in an attempt to prompt government to fine companies who fail to update their records so that mail is sent to incorrect addresses.

Dear Minister Rowland,
I would like to suggest an update to standards applied to mailing in Australia.
I currently receive mail intended for previous tenants of my house who have not been at this address for over a decade. I am, by law, not allowed to dispose of this mail. I use the recommended ‘return to sender’ procedure. Still, new mail arrives from the same companies. Clearly, the cost of sending this mail to said companies is insignificant compared to determining the correct address. For me, and this problem is experienced by many, it is an ongoing nuisance.

I propose policies are implemented to incentivize companies to refrain from this behaviour. Simple fines would work I would imagine. Even allowing Aus Post to charge for returning this mail might help. Please bring this persistent annoyance to an end with some new policy.

I am sure I could come up with other suitable approaches but I figure they would want to work that out. Hopefully it move the topic forward.
